Q&A

1. How often should I change my air filters?

Generally, every 1-3 months for the 1” filters and 4-6 moths for the wider filters. If you have pets or allergies, aim for the shorter end of that range.

2. What's the best way to prevent the outside tap (hose bib) from freezing in winter?

To keep your outside tap from freezing disconnect the garden hose. Then turn off the water supply to the outdoor faucet from inside your house (usually found in the basement or utility room). Next, open the hose bib to drain any remaining water out of the pipe.

FYI: If you have a Frost-Free outside tap you may not have a shut off valve inside.

3. How do I reset a tripped circuit breaker?

Find your electrical panel, locate the breaker that’s flipped (usually not fully in the “on” position), and switch it off, then back on again.

Upgrade Your Home with Triple Pane, Energy-Efficient Windows: A Clear Choice for Comfort and Savings

If you’re looking for a home improvement project that offers a solid return on investment, improves comfort, and boosts your home’s curb appeal, consider upgrading to triple pane, energy-efficient windows. These high-performance windows are more than just a fancy upgrade—they’re a practical way to enhance your home’s energy efficiency and overall value. Let’s take a closer look at why triple pane windows might be the perfect addition to your home.

Why Triple Pane Windows?

Triple pane windows, as the name suggests, have three layers of glass, with two air spaces in between. These layers are filled with inert gases like argon or krypton, which provide excellent insulation. The extra pane and air gaps create a barrier that helps to reduce heat transfer, noise, and even condensation.

Benefits to the Homeowner

  1. Improved Energy Efficiency and Lower Utility Bills One of the biggest draws of triple pane windows is their ability to significantly reduce your energy consumption. They provide better insulation than single or even double pane windows, keeping your home warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer. This reduced heat transfer means your HVAC system doesn’t have to work as hard, which can lead to substantial savings on your utility bills. In fact, some homeowners report saving up to 25-30% on heating and cooling costs after installing triple pane windows.

  2. Enhanced Comfort All Year Round Ever notice how the area around your windows feels drafty in the winter or hot in the summer? Triple pane windows help eliminate these uncomfortable cold and hot spots by maintaining a more consistent indoor temperature. No more huddling by the heater in the winter or cranking up the AC in the summer. Your home will feel more comfortable year-round, no matter what the weather is doing outside.

  3. Noise Reduction for a Quieter Home If you live on a busy street, near an airport, or just have noisy neighbors, you know how frustrating outside noise can be. Triple pane windows offer superior noise reduction compared to single or double pane options. The additional glass layer and the gas-filled spaces act as a sound barrier, making your home quieter and more peaceful.

  4. Increased Home Value and Curb Appeal Energy-efficient upgrades like triple pane windows are a strong selling point for potential buyers. They know that these windows mean lower utility bills, greater comfort, and a quieter home—all attractive features. Upgrading to triple pane windows can increase your home’s value and curb appeal, making it more appealing on the market if you decide to sell.

  5. Reduced Condensation and Better Indoor Air Quality Triple pane windows are less prone to condensation buildup on the inside, which is especially important in colder climates. Less condensation means less chance for mold and mildew growth around your windows, contributing to a healthier indoor environment. Plus, you’ll spend less time wiping down windows and dealing with water damage.

  6. Improved Durability and Security Triple pane windows aren’t just about energy efficiency—they’re also tougher. With three layers of glass, they’re harder to break than single or double pane windows. This added durability can provide an extra level of security for your home, making it more resistant to break-ins.

Considerations for the Upgrade

While triple pane windows offer numerous benefits, there are a few things to keep in mind:

  • Cost: Triple pane windows can be more expensive upfront than double or single pane options. However, consider this an investment—you’ll save money on energy bills over time and increase your home’s value.

  • Installation: Even the best windows won’t perform well if they aren’t installed properly. If your not sure about how to properly install them then hire a qualified contractor who has experience with triple pane window installations.

Ready to Make the Switch?

If you’re looking for a home upgrade that pays off in comfort, savings, and long-term value, triple pane windows are a smart choice. Not only will you enjoy a cozier, quieter home, but you’ll also see the benefits reflected in lower utility bills and increased home value. Plus, with a variety of styles and designs available, you won’t have to sacrifice aesthetics for efficiency.

So, what are you waiting for? Take the plunge, upgrade those windows, and watch as your home becomes more efficient, comfortable, and valuable. Your future self—and your wallet—will thank you!

🛠 DIY Projects: How to Upgrade to a Frost-Free Tap

Frost free Tap

If you live in an area where winter temperatures dip below freezing, upgrading to a frost-free hose bib (exterior tap) can save you a lot of headaches—and potentially a costly plumbing bill. Unlike regular hose bibs, frost-free models are designed to prevent freezing and bursting pipes, giving you peace of mind throughout the colder months.

Luckily, installing a frost-free hose bib is a manageable DIY project for most homeowners. Here’s how you can do it yourself!

Materials and Tools You’ll Need:

  • Frost-free hose bib

  • Pipe wrench or adjustable wrench

  • Pipe cutter or hacksaw

  • Pipe joint compound (pipe dope) or Teflon tape

  • Pliers

  • Screwdriver

  • Torch and solder (if using copper pipe)

  • Pipe insulation or heat tape (optional)

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  1. Turn Off the Water Supply:

    • Locate your home's main water shut-off valve and turn off the water supply to the exterior faucet. Open the existing hose bib to drain any remaining water from the line.

  2. Remove the Old Hose Bib:

    • Use a pipe wrench or adjustable wrench to unscrew the existing hose bib from the pipe. If it is soldered on (common with copper pipes), you may need to cut it off with a pipe cutter or hacksaw. Make sure to cut it as close to the base as possible to leave enough room for the new bib.

  3. Measure and Cut the New Hose Bib:

    • Measure the length of the frost-free hose bib and make sure it will reach inside your wall to where it can connect to the existing plumbing. Most frost-free hose bibs are 6-12 inches long. Trim the end of the pipe if needed to fit the new bib.

  4. Prepare the Connection:

    • If you're connecting to a copper pipe, clean the cut end with sandpaper or a pipe brush to remove any corrosion or debris. Apply flux to the pipe and the fitting on the new hose bib.

    • For PEX or PVC pipes, use the appropriate adapter fittings and follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Apply Teflon tape or pipe joint compound (pipe dope) to the threads of the hose bib to create a watertight seal.

  5. Install the Frost-Free Hose Bib:

    • Slide the frost-free hose bib into the hole in the exterior wall. Make sure the downward slope of the hose bib is correct to allow any remaining water to drain out.

    • Connect the hose bib to the existing plumbing using the appropriate fittings. If using copper, solder the joint with a torch and solder. Make sure the joint is watertight.

  6. Secure the Hose Bib:

    • Use screws to secure the mounting flange of the hose bib to the exterior wall. Ensure it’s firmly in place, and check that the faucet handle turns freely.

  7. Turn On the Water Supply and Test:

    • Slowly turn the water supply back on and check for any leaks around the new hose bib and the interior connection. If you notice any leaks, tighten the connections or apply additional pipe joint compound.

  8. Insulate the Pipe (Optional but Recommended):

    • To further protect against freezing, consider adding pipe insulation or heat tape to the interior pipe where the frost-free hose bib connects. This adds an extra layer of protection, especially in very cold climates.

Benefits of a Frost-Free Hose Bib:

  • Prevents Freezing: Frost-free hose bibs are designed to keep water out of the exposed part of the pipe, preventing freezing and potential bursting.

  • Reduces Risk of Water Damage: No more worrying about surprise leaks or pipe bursts when the weather turns cold.

  • Low Maintenance: Once installed, a frost-free hose bib requires minimal upkeep—just remember to disconnect hoses in the winter!

Final Tips:

  • Always disconnect hoses from the frost-free hose bib during freezing temperatures to allow the water inside the pipe to drain properly.

  • Check the hose bib periodically for any signs of wear or damage, especially after the first winter.

By upgrading to a frost-free hose bib, you’re taking a proactive step to protect your home from winter’s harsh effects. It's a relatively simple project that can save you time, money, and stress down the road. Happy DIYing!
